Living a new life with a prosthetic leg at the age of 82

An Inspiring Journey of Resilience: Joop Stet’s Story of Overcoming Amputation and Finding Independence
At 82, many people may be slowing down, but not Joop Stet. After facing countless challenges throughout his life, he encountered one more: the decision to amputate his leg to regain mobility and independence. Joop’s strength, courage, and unwavering determination to move forward serve as a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start again. His story is one of resilience, hope, and the incredible power of the human spirit.
Joop’s Journey: From Amputation to Mobility
"In July 2022, my right leg was amputated above the knee. A life confined to a wheelchair or mobility scooter was not how I wanted to continue," says Joop. "I first wanted to drive a car again. Since June of this year, I’ve been successful in that goal, driving a new car with an adapted pedal (accelerator pedal to the left of the brake pedal)."
Joop’s determination didn’t stop there. His next goal was to play golf again, and he is well on his way to achieving it.
The Road to Recovery: Physiotherapy with Robbie Braz
In February 2023, Joop and his wife returned to their home on Madeira for the first time since his amputation. It was here that they connected with physiotherapist Robbie Braz, who has been working with Joop to help him regain strength and independence. Robbie provides in-home physiotherapy treatments, focusing not only on Joop's recovery from the amputation but also on addressing left drop foot, a condition Joop had suffered from for over 20 years.
Thanks to Robbie’s targeted physiotherapy exercises, Joop has seen significant improvement in his calf muscle strength, resulting in greater stability when standing and walking. "The exercises Robbie has given me have instilled confidence in me, and I am sure I will achieve my goals," Joop shares.
Why Physiotherapy Matters in Recovery After Amputation
For those who have undergone amputation, physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the recovery process. It helps to improve mobility, strength, and balance, all of which are essential for regaining independence. Physiotherapists like Robbie Braz are specially trained to design personalized treatment plans that address individual needs and goals. Whether it’s strengthening muscles, improving gait, or using adaptive devices to regain mobility, physiotherapy can make a life-changing difference in recovery.
