Why You Wake Up Stiff After Hiking in Madeira (And What to Do About It)

Visiting Madeira is an unforgettable experience—from the panoramic views at Pico do Arieiro to the lush levadas winding through the island. But after a long day on uneven stone steps or steep trails, it’s common to wake up feeling stiff in your legs, knees, or lower back.

The good news? A little understanding of why it happens and how to recover can help you enjoy your next hike even more.

Why stiffness happens

When you hike downhill or over uneven terrain, your quadriceps and other stabilizing muscles undergo eccentric loading—they contract while lengthening to control each step. This type of muscle work creates micro-tears in the muscle fibers, which is why you feel soreness the next day.

During intense hiking, your muscles also produce lactic acid and other metabolic by-products. While lactic acid is often cleared within an hour after exercise, some metabolic fatigue compounds can linger in the muscle tissue, contributing to that “heavy” or stiff feeling in the morning. Your lower back can also feel it if your core or glutes fatigue, especially when carrying a backpack or leaning forward on descents.

Morning stiffness is simply your muscles and connective tissues recovering and repairing after a day of activity. It’s normal, temporary, and actually a sign your body is adapting to the challenge.

How to feel better faster

Here are some practical tips to ease morning stiffness and help your muscles recover:

  • Gentle movement first thing – a short walk or light stretching helps increase blood flow and flush metabolic by-products.
  • Hydration and electrolytes – rehydrating helps your muscles clear residual metabolic waste faster and restores optimal function.
  • Soft tissue care – foam rolling, massage, or self-massage of calves, quads, and lower back releases tight spots and stimulates circulation.
  • Engage your core and hips – activating glutes and core muscles helps reduce strain on your lower back and supports overall movement.

Preventing stiffness on future hikes

  • Use trekking poles to offload knees and improve balance on descents.
  • Control your steps with a soft bend in the knee and shorter stride lengths.
  • Backpack adjustments – keep your load close to your body and evenly distributed.
